Hello Oppo. Long time no see. Two years, actually. I return because I’ve recently come into ownership of a pair of original 1928 Connecticut plates (pictured). Although I don’t currently have anything appropriate for these plates to live on (a ‘28 plate on a ‘76 BMW? Don’t think so, but definitely thought about it) I was curious about the possibility and process of using this plate to legally register a car in Connecticut as a Connecticut resident. I did some searching but largely came up empty handed.

Thanks

http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=811&q=540192 Looks like you can only get plates that just say classic. Bummer.

Michigan will let you register a classic car with a historic plate like that as long as the model year and plate year are the same. Although if you do that you aren’t supposed to daily it.

Call the DMV or whatever it’s called in CT, and ask them. Then call again on a different day and ask someone else. Maybe do it a third time, if the first two answers are different enough. I’ve done enough weird stuff with DMV, and I’ve called ahead, showed up with everything I thought I needed, only to be turned away. So now I call several times.

I have a 1961 truck with a set of matching 1961 plates on it, that I am legally allowed to display as my only plates. The vehicle first had to be registered as an antique, then I had to come to DMV personally with both the current plates and the vintage plates, to then get a permit to display the old ones. They are then linked in the DMV computer system so if they look up my vintage plate number, one of the results is my other plate number and all my info.

But some people have sworn they were told you could only run ONE plate like that. Or that you had to still display the others in your window. Or the other way around. I have my other plates in the glove box, but - I swear I’m not making this up - the DMV person told me, “don’t put them in your glove box, because when an officer is approaching your vehicle in a traffic stop, they don’t like to see you rooting around, you know, they can’t tell if you might be reaching for a weapon.” Wait. You mean, don’t put my plates where literally every single person I know keeps their registration and insurance information? That you’ll have to get out when you’re stopped? Huh?

Right, so there you have it.

See my reply about NH - you can display vintage plates, but yeah, you’re not supposed to daily an antique-registered vehicle. But I say, if I’m displaying the vintage plates, how do they know? Do the cops really know the ins and outs of all the DMV rules? Not even the DMV does, in my experience. I say do what you want until you get called out.

In CA you have to have the vehicle to match a year of manufacture plate. I got some for my truck. And they used 1951 plates with tags for a few years. So that was confusing til I found a plate dealer on Ebay.
